Philadelphia International Airport (IATA: PHL, ICAO: KPHL, FAA LID: PHL) is the primary airport of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It is also considered one of the busiest passenger terminals in the world.

It is 11 kilometers from the downtown area. Currently, at least 25 airlines operate in the facility providing hundreds of daily departures to more than a hundred domestic and international destinations, including Canada, the Caribbean, Latin America, Europe, and the Middle East.

Established in 1925, it has four runways and covers an area of 2,598 acres with annual passenger traffic of 17.8 million in 2021. It sits 11 meters above sea level at 39°52′19″N and 075°14′28″W.

In 1925, the Pennsylvania National Guard used the present site as a training airfield. It continued to operate until the completion of the terminal building in 1940.

It used to have shorter runways in the '50s until modernized to meet airline requirements for bigger passenger planes in the following decades.

In the 1980s, PHL hosted several hubs, including US Airways (USAir). Subsequently, the airline became the dominant carrier at PHL in the 1980s and 1990s.

In 2019, the airport’s busiest international routes were London–Heathrow, United Kingdom, Toronto–Pearson, Canada, Cancún, Mexico, Dublin, Ireland, Montego Bay, Jamaica, Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, Montréal–Trudeau, Canada, Doha, Qatar, Frankfurt, Germany, and Rome–Fiumicino, Italy.

The busiest in 2021 include Orlando, Florida, Atlanta, Georgia, Charlotte, North Carolina, Fort Lauderdale, Miami, Florida, Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas, Denver, Colorado, Chicago–O'Hare, Illinois, San Juan, Puerto Rico, and Tampa, Florida.

It has 3,254,354 square feet of terminal space, seven terminal buildings, and 126 total boarding gates.
